Land use survey
Walk along a street at the allocated site and look at the ground floor land uses of five units. Classify the land uses into RICEPOTS categories (residential, industrial, commercial etc.)
Building height
Identify a building reflective of the site. Count the number of floors in the building.
Noise survey
Using the ‘sound meter’ app, read the peak value for noise registered on the screen over a 30 second period
Environmental quality survey
Select an area representative of the site and rate it on a scale of 1-5 for amount of litter, vegetation, air pollution, amenities and building maintenance. The higher the score the better the area.
Building quality survey
Select a building representative of the area and score it on a scale of 1-5 for quality of brickwork, windows and general appearance. The higher the score the better the area.
Traffic and pedestrian count
Stand at an agreed point. Start the stopwatch and count the number of cars and people that pass in both directions in a period of 2 minutes.
Epitome word
Walk around one area and write down one word which sums up the location. Repeat by asking different people.
Photos
Take a photo of the site to accurately portray the location
Questionnaire
Use random sampling to select participants to answer a short questionnaire
