Plate Boundaries Flashcards
1
Q
Divergent plate boundary
AKA constructive plate boundary
A
- Convection currents pull tectonic plates apart
- New crust is created
- Magma can reach the surface through cracks and cause volcanic eruptions
2
Q
Conservative plate boundary
AKA transform plate boundary
A
- Where plates are moving side by side
- No crust is created or destroyed
- Stress builds up on faults, and a sudden release creates earthquakes
3
Q
Convergent plate boundary
AKA destructive plate boundary
A
- Where an oceanic and continental plate are moving towards each other
- Pressure builds up and volcanic eruptions occur
- Earthquakes also occur because of subduction
4
Q
Collision plate boundary
A
- Where two continental plates are moving towards each other
- They crash and crumple upwards to form fold mountains
- Earthquakes occur due to movement and pressure
5
Q
Hotspot
A
A large plume of hot mantle material rising from deep within the Earth. A line of volcanoes develops as a plate moves over a hotspot.
6
Q
Subduction
A
When an oceanic plate is forced underneath a continental place because it is denser
