Why is it hard to get the number of people living in slums 100% accurate?
-so overcrowded and children running around everywhere so hard to count
-large populations
-people dying and being born all the time
-lack of gov presence
Why is the amount of slums decreasing?
LICs and NEEs are getting more money so they can afford to have less people living in slums
Economic facts about Bangalore (India):
- engineers working in space research only get paid 10% of what engineers in uk get paid
- the city is divided and unequal between rich and poor
- the area still has informal workers (non regular jobs which don’t pay tax), especially in the slums

- a low tax government policy has attracted big TNCs to Bangalore such as Texas Instruments
- investment in schools by the Indian gov 30 years ago is paying off now
- the government started a policy to have land at the edge of city set aside to create a science park called ‘electronics city’

- many poor people forced to live in slums and rubbish dumps or alongside railways
- rural migrants coming to city create a shortage of housing
- less than 50% of people in slums have clean drinking water or electricity
- the city has 200 engineering colleges and many unis

- the Indian IT company “infosys” has set up head office here
- the percentage of jobs in IT has decreased
- companies in the knowledge economy (e.g. computer software) have invested in Bangalore from HICs

- the city has a youthful population (high % under 30) due to large number of migrants
- the city has “population momentum” as migrants are often of child bearing age

A central business district which has modern buildings, main road and markets
Why are the unis next to technology parks?
As well educated people can work and get experience at the science park
Why are the slums near to companies?
As people want to try and get jobs as these companies… also at the edge as that is where land is available
Why are the technology parks near to main roads?
As it is easy access to them
