London Docklands (urban Regeneration) CS Flashcards
What were the 3 stages of the dock?
1950s- busy port
1981- run down, gov bought the land
1998- building project was finished
What did the uk gov set up in the aim to regenerate inner city areas with large amounts of derelict and un-used land ?
Urban development corporations (UDCs)
Why did the London docks go into decline?
- dock was too small (an increase in ship size meant that big boats couldn’t fit in the port)
- the dock mostly had factories used for manufacturing (these were moved abroad e.g. china as things are easier to be mass produced at a lower cost
- younger population leaving as they went to get jobs elsewhere, where there was more opportunities
- transport links were poor to central London (people couldn’t come in and out easily so money wasn’t spent e.g. businesses)
What were the dock lands like before they declined?
- were busy, ad lots of workers, successful
- used as a port for shipping boats
