Describe the location of Freiburg:
Located in the south of Germany, west of Munich
It is in the vauban district of Freiburg
Where was the new housing in Freiburg built on?
A derelict army base land. This is good as it is more environmentally friendly, protects habitats from being destroyed, prevents urban sprawl, increases tourism, boosting economy, more greenery (less co2 and more oxygen)
How has Freiburg tried to be environmentally friendly?
- intergrated traffic management plan, prioritises environmental friendly modes of transport e.g. walking, cycling and public transit
- pedestrian zone
- 70% of the population lives within 500 m of tram stop
- 400km worth of cycle paths
- all new houses must use no more than 65 kilowatt hours of heating energy
- fit homes with insulation and solar panel, reduction of energy averaged 38% per building

How is Freiburg socially sustainable?
- public transport is convenient, fast, reliable and comfortable
- regiocard allows passengers unlimited travel on Freiburgs public transport
- cars can travel no faster than walking speed, children are allowed to play in the street
- each household is provided with three bins for helping replying
- source of fruit and veg from allotments for people to eat
- jobs are created, people arnt unemployed …. In the feild of environmental eduction alone, 700 new jobs were created
What makes Freiburg economically sustainable?
- Economic benefits are noticeable in the sectors of manufacturing, research and eduction and tourism
- “environmental economy” employs nearly 10,000 people in 1500 businesses, generating 500 million euros per year
- some homes earn 6000 euros per year by creating more solar energy than they use electricity
Why is the heliotrope building root a good idea?
Rotates 360 degrees, so makes the most of the suns energy by being able to rotate according to the direction of the sun
