Upper Urinary Problems Flashcards
What is pyeloneprhitis caused by?
Glomerulonephritis?
Acute Tubular Necrosis?
A bacteria
Allergy (Histamine Response), Commonly a STREP Infection
Death of kidneys due to lack of perfusion (similar to an MI)
Why does a kidney infection cause so much damage to the body?
Kidney dysfunction or failure can effect all other organ systems
How can the heart cause acute tubular necrosis?
Lack of blood flow to the kidneys
Note: Glomerularnephritis and Pyelonephritis can also cause acute tubular necrosis
What is something to keep in mind about glomerulonephritis?
Glomerulonephritis is usually is secondary to 1 of 2 antibody induced injuries by
Anti-Glomerular Basement Membrane (GBM) antibodies
Reaction to circulating non-glomerular antigens (Immune Complexes)
What is one thing to keep in mind in a Glomerulonephritis?
Effects BOTH Kidneys (Systemic)
What is one S&S of Glomerulonephritis that you know that the kidneys are damage?
Proteinuria (You KNOW you have damage because the glomerulus stops proteins from getting through
What can glomeruloneprhitis be secondary to?
STREP Infection
Impetigo
What is your first goal when treating Glomerulonephritis?
What is the second goal? Give some examples and why do them?

React to Changes in the Patient
- Antihypertensives- If blood pressure is severely elevated
What are some ways to prevent Glomerulonephritis?
Finish Antibiotics Treatment
Seek prompt treatment of a strep infection
Prevent HIV and Hepatitis through safe sex and avoiding IV drug use
Control Blood Sugar if Diabetic
If Hypertensive control Blood Sugar
