Women are more likely to get UTI’s because of short urethra
No antibacterial prostate secretions
What is the most common cause of stones?
Oxilate stones (Calcium)
What is hydronephrosis and what does it cause?
Backup of the urine above an obstruction
Can lead to destruction of renal parenchyma-> Kidney Failure
Dilating ureters can also form a reservoir for urine
What are some general UTI S&S?
- Dark, Cloudy, and Foul Smelling Urine
- Hematuria
- Low Grade Fever
- Enuresis
- Nocturia
- Pyuria
What S&S can occur when a general UTI travels up to the kidnesy
Abdominal Flank Pain
Tenderness
What is the number one nursing intervention for UTIs?
Why do this?
Force Fluids (Up to 3,000 ml/day), Monitor Intake and Output
Flushes the urinary tract and acidify the urine
What is one side effect of Pyridium (Phenazopryidine or urogesic)?
Causes bright Orange Colored Urine
