Adenovirus, Influenza A/B, Para’flu 1/3, RSV and Rhinovirus
What are the common bacteria that cause infections in the upper respiratory tract?
H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, S. aureus, S. pyogenes and S. pneumoniae
What is the main complication of rhinitis?
It can be a prodrome to other illnesses including pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia
On average, how long would you expect a runny nose to last?
10-12 days
What are the signs and symptoms of Otitis Media?
Fever, pain and a bulging eardrum which is red and inflammed
What would be the treatment of Otitis Media?
Analgesia (No antibiotics)

Throat swab
What is the treatment for tonsillitis/pharyngitis?
Either nothing or 10 days penicillin (not amoxicillin)

Coryza, stridor, hoarse voice and a ‘barking cough’
What is the treatment for croup?
Oral dexamethasone
What are the signs of epiglottitis?
Stridor and drooling

Intubation and antibiotics
