Anatomy of the Chest Wall and Mechanics of Breathing Flashcards
What encloses the thorax?
Ribs, spine and diaphragm
Where is the pleural cavity?
Between the visceral pleura and the parietal pleura
What does the pleural cavity contain?
Intrapleural fluid
State Boyle’s Law
The pressure exerted by a gas is inversely proportional to it’s volume
State Dalton’s Law
The total pressure of a gas mixture is a sum of the pressures of the individual gases
State Charles Law
The volume occupied by a gas is directly related to the absolute temperature
Why is Charles Law relevant?
It will affect samples and lab results
State Henry’s Law
The amount of gas dissolved in a liquid is determined by the pressure of the gas and its solubility in liquid
Which muscle contributes the most effort to breathing
Diaphragm
Where would you find the visceral pleural membrane?
Coating the outer surface of the lungs
Where would you find the parietal pleural membrane?
Coating the inner surface of the ribs
What is the function of pleural fluid?
Pleural fluid sticks the two parts of the pleural membrane together and allows them to slide past each other
What would happen if the membrane was not there?
Contracting the diaphragm and expanding the ribs would not cause the lungs to expand
Is intrapleural pressure positive or negative in relation to atmospheric pressure?
Negative
Which muscles are used in inspiration?
Diaphragm, external intercostal muscles, scalenes and sternocleidomastoids
