Upper Limb: Nerves Flashcards
Describe the pattern seen in the brachial plexus

Roots, Trunks, Divisions, Cords, Branches (Nerves)
The brachial plexus is derived from the ventral rami of what spinal cord segments?
C5,C6,C7,C8 and T1
What is a dermatome?
An area of skin innervated by a spinal segment
What is a myotome?
A group of muscles innervated by a single spinal segment (usually with a common action)
Why are some movements innervated by different spinal segments?
Because nerves allowing for that movement can originate from more than one segment
Where is the brachial plexus roots found?
It starts by coming out between scalenus medius and scalenus anterior
How are the cords names?
They are named in relation to the axillary artery so lateral, posterior and medial
Draw the pattern of the brachial plexus
See week one lecture
Name the branches of the brachial plexus
Lateral cord produces - Musculocutaneous nerve
Lateral and medial cord join to form the median nerve
Medial cord also produces the ulnar nerve
Posterior cord gives off axillary and radial nerve
Name the two minor branches of the brachial plexus that don’t supply the upper limb
From C5 - Phrenic Nerve
From T1 - 1st Intercostal Nerve
What minor branch branches off posteriorly from C5/6/7
The long thoracic nerve
Name the nerves branching off the top of the brachial plexus
Dorsal Scapular Nerve - branches off C5 root
Subclavius Nerve and suprascapular nerve - branch off superior trunk
Lateral pectoral nerve - branches off lateral cord
What three minor branches come off the posterior cord?
Lower subscapular nerve
Thoracodorsal nerve
Upper subscapular nerve
what three minor branches come off the medial cord?
Medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve
Medial brachial cutaneous nerve
Medial pectoral Nerve
What is the cutaneous nerve in the axilla
The intercostal brachial nerve (T2)
