Upper Limb Flashcards
Bones of upper limb
Shoulder
Clavicle
Scapula
Hinge joint
Synovial joint
Uniaxial with concave/convex
Flexion/extension
Pivot joint
Synovial joint
Uniaxial joint with rounded surface articulating with a ring
Rotation
Condyloid joint
Synovial joint
Biaxial with an oval surface fitting into an elliptical socket,
Flexion.extension
Adduction/abduction
Saddle joint
Synovial joint
Biaxial joint where each side has both a concave and convex surface
Flexion/extension
Adduction/abduction
Ball and socket joint
Synovial joint
Multiaxial joint with rounded ball like surface fitting into a concave cup like socket
Plane joint
Synovial joint
Multiaxial gliding joint with flat articulating surface
Lesser ability to move than ball and socket because more bones and ligaments are in the way
Muscle action analysis
- Locate muscle and bony attachments
- Determine joints crossed
- Determine the type of joint and possible axes of rotation/movement
- Determine the position of the muscle attachment in relation to the axes of rotation at the joint to determine possible movement and mechanical advantage
- Consider synergistic and antagonist muscles and other factors that might impact range of motion and strength of contraction.
Shoulder joints
Acromioclavicular joint
Sternoclavicular joint
Glen oh unreal joint
Acromioclavicluar joint ligaments
Coracoacromial ligament
Coracoclavicluar ligament
Acromioclavicular ligament
Glenohmeral joint ligaments
Coracoacromial ligament
Glenoid labrum
Glenohumeral ligaments
Coracohumeral ligament
Scapulohumeral rhythm
120 degrees by glenoid numeral joint.
Other 60 degrees by rotation of scapula.
Elbow joint ligaments
Ulnar collateral ligament (posterior anterior transverse)
Radial collateral ligament
Anular ligament
Anterior muscle compartment of arm
Innervation and function
Anterior divisions of brachial plexus provides Flexion Adduction Medial rotation pronation Supination
Posterior muscle compartment of arm
Innervation and function
Posterior divisions of brachial plexus procvide Extension Abduction Lateral rotation Supination
