Nervous System Flashcards
dermatome
area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerce
cutatneous innervation
area of skin supplied by peripheral nerves that contains fibers from multiple spinal nerve roots
myotome
mass of muscle supplied by a single spinal nerve
sclerotome
portion of somite that gives rise to bone
investing fascia
connective tissue that surrounds individual muscle or neurovascular bundle
subserous fascia
layer of connective tissue that line internal surface o fbody wall and attaches to the parietal layer of serous membrane
superficial fasica
later of connective tissue with varying levels of fat that contain cutaneous branches of the vessels and nerves supplyng the overlaying skin
deep fascia
thickened band of connective tissue located at or near joints holding tendons in place during movements
bursa
closed sac of serous membrane with potential space that contains a thin layer of lubricating fluid
intermuscular septum
connective tissue that divides groups of functionally similar muscles into fascial compartments
nerve plexus
mixing of multiple spinal nerves into a single peripheral nerve or the contribution of a single spinal nerve into a numer of peripheral nerves
somatic nerves
responsible for general pain/ temperature / movement sensation and skeletal muscle contraction
single cell system with efferents having cell body within the anterior horn of gray matter and the afferent cell body within the spinal ganglia of the dorsal root
autonomic nerves
responsible for innervating the viscera
functions not generally conscious of
two cell systems - first cell body in cns, second cell body somewhere in periphery
portal system
coalescing veins that transport nutrient rich blood from capillary beds of various organs of GI system directly to capillary beds of liver for processing
arteriovenous shunt
communications between arterial and venous vessels n the skin that allow blood flow to bypass the capillary beds
anastomoses
multiple arterial branches that proide collateral circulation to the muscles and joints of the shoulder in case one route becomes obstructed
accompanying veins
irregular network of venous vessels that surround the deep arteries of the upper limb and serces as a countercurrent heat exchanger
venous plexus
network of small veins that coalesce to form larger veins that drain the dorsum of the hand
