Q

FTIS Background

A

After a major accident in 1996 resulting from a fuel tank explosion, the FAA undertook research into fuel tank flammability and ignition risks and published a rule requiring operators and air transport manufacturers to reduce the exposure to catastrophic fuel-tank explosion.

This can be achieved by mitigating the two main conditions that must be present in a fuel tank to support combustion that can lead to a fuel-tank explosion:
1- an ignition source
2- a flammable fuel air gaseaous mixture
