Q

What is the history of the Napanook vineyard?

A

John Daniel of Inglenook bought Napanook, an 120 acre property in Yountville, from Louis Stralla in 1946. Daniel refused to sell this parcel and even told his daughters to never sell the land before his death in 1970. Robert Mondavi purchased most of the Napanook grapes in the years following Daniel’s death before Christian Moueix approached the sisters about a partnership. Thus Dominus was born, first vintage 1983, released 1988.

This was before estate bottling laws, and Heublein began selling all of its cheap jug wine as “estate bottled” Inglenook. Tens of thousands of bottles of plonk labeled Inglenook flooded the market.

In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola bought the old Niebaum estate, with 85 acres of vines planted to it, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, with the counsel of Robert Mondavi and Andre Tchelistcheff, he made the first vintage of Rubicon, which would not be released until 1985.
