When did Inglenook suffer severe brand dilution and drop in quality – and why? Who eventually bought the old Niebaum estate and, what was the new winery name, and what was the year of their first vintage?
In 1964 John Daniel sold Inglenook to United Vitners, a giant operation that acted as the production and marketing agent for Allied Grape Growers (a huge viticultural cooperative). But the real blow came in 1969 when Heublein, a giant food conglomerate based in CT bought 82% of Inglenook from United Vitners. This was before estate bottling laws, and Heublein began selling all of its cheap jug wine as “estate bottled” Inglenook. Tens of thousands of bottles of plonk labeled Inglenook flooded the market.
In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola bought the old Niebaum estate, with 85 acres of vines planted to it, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, with the counsel of Robert Mondavi and Andre Tchelistcheff, he made the first vintage of Rubicon, which would not be released until 1985.
