Includes 28 in North America and Europe; goals are to keep peace and defend members in war; may send armed forces in crisis areas; works with other nations to prevent conflict
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
Promotes free trade; 150 member nations; encourages member nations to remove trade barriers
World Trade Organization (WTO)
Parts of the UN; improves health for all people; fights and prevents disease; helps countries meet health standards; ended smallpox; teaches people about the HIV virus
World Health Organization (WHO)
Volunteer group run by U.S. government, now has volunteers working in 77 countries; helps Americans & other world citizens understand each other; promote public health; teach people to use technology for business development
Peace Corps
Based in Switzerland; unites efforts of Red Cross and Red Crescent groups around the world; provides aid to victims of war or natural disasters; maintains a neutral position in wars
