Unit Three- Darwins Theory Flashcards
when did darwin develop his theory
when he visited the Galápagos Islands on HMS Beagle
what did Darwin discover
theory of evolution- how modern organisms evolved over a long period of time through decent on common ancestors
what are darwin’s three patterns he noticed
- species vary globally
- species vary locally
- species vary over time
explain species vary globally
-different yet ecologically similar animals inhabit different but ecologically similar habitats
-don’t have close ancestors develop similar characteristics because of similar habitat
explain species vary locally
related species often occupied different habitats within a local area
explain species vary overtime
darwin realized that fossils of extinct animals were similar to living species
darwin’s 5 main points
- members of a population have heritable traits
- in a population, more individuals are born than can survive
- some animals have adaptable characteristics that enable them to survive and reproduce better
- once a favourable trait is developed, it’s more likely to be passed on
- the result on natural selection is a population adapted to its environment
