what are the 10 rights of medication administration?
- Right patient
- Right dose
- Right medication
- Right route
- Right time
- Right education
- Right to refuse
- Right assessment

what are medication trade vs generic names?

what is pharacokinetics? why do we need to know this?
- the study of how medication enter the body, reach the site of action, are metabolized, and exit the body (the prinicples of pharacokinetics)
- we need to know this to give meds at the right time, chose the proper routes, and evaluate the patient’s response
what is pharmacotherapeutics?
the study of the therapeutic uses and effects of medications
what are the 4 effects of medications?
- therapeutic effects: intended/desired effects
- adverse effects: unintended / undesireable / unpredictable effects
- side effects: predictable and often unavoidable effects
- toxic effects: happens after taking a med for a long time
what are idiosyncratic and allergic reactions?
- idiosyncratic reactions are the unpredictable effects of a med
- allergic reactions are adverse unpredictable effects of a med
what is medication tolerance?
when patients receive a med for long periods of time and need higher and higher doses to produce the same effect
what are the 2 types of medication dependence?
- psychological dependence: desires the med for benefit other than intended effect
- physiological dependence: physiological adaptation causes intense physical disturbances when med is stopped
what information should be included in a medication order/prescription
- patient name
- date and time
- medication (generic and/or trade name)
- dose
- route
- frequency
what physiological changes in the older adult impact medications?
- decreased pulmonary function
- increased blood pressure
- GI motility slows
- decreased bladder size in men with enlarged prostates
- decreased immunity
- increase in polypharmacy
