Unit one: normal growth and development Flashcards
What is spina bifida
Opening/ gap in the spinal column; meninges bulge out - can be at diff levels
Prenatal development
Germinal - ovum - blastocyte - 0-2 weeks
Embryonic -3-8 weeks
Fetus 8+40
Premature
Before 36 weeks
Prenatal- 1st 2 weeks
Cells divide while in Fallopian tube , where fertilization occurs(inner placenta/ outer fetus)
2 cells - zygote
Outer wall
Ectoderm- skin - nervous system
Once cell embeds into uterus what happens?
Differentiation of cells into:
Ectoderm /mesoderm/ endoderm
What is cell differentiation
This is when the cells differentiate into the brain and the spinal cord and the skin and organs once the cell is embedded in the uterus
Embryonic.
From 2 to 8 weeks, more differentiation
Migrated cells form crest folds onto each other forming neural tube (top brain, bottom spinal column) vascular system
Embryonic: 22 days
Brain and spinal column formed
Folic acid
Helps prevent neural tube defects
Embryonic : 4-5 weeks
Arms and legs
Embryonic: 8th week
All organs need to function except sex organs
Fetal
9-birth
14 wks:feeding mvmts
29 was: suck thumb
3rd month : B or G
Increase in size by 6x
Brain development:
Ventricles produce CSF: nutrients & cushion
After birth Myelination
20 weeks babies not fully myelination
Continues to develop until 20 yrs old
