The anatomical position
Standing in the erect position with head, eyes, and toes facing forward, the heels and toes together, and the arms hanging at the sides with palms facing forward
When the body lies facing DOWNWARD
Prone
When the body lies face UPWARD
Supine
A vertical plane which passes through the midline of the body dividing it inot symmetrical right and left halves
Median plane
Any vertical plane which passes through the body, EITHER within or parallel to the median plane
Sagittal plane
Synonymous with median plane
Midsagittal plane
Any vertical plane which passes through the body parallel to but NOT within the median plane
Parasagittal plane
Any vertical plane which passes through the body at RIGHT angles to the median plane, dividing the body into ANTERIOR and POSTERIOR parts
Coronal (frontal) plane
Any plane which passes through the body at right angles to BOTH the median and coronal planes, dividing the body into UPPER and LOWER parts.
Horizontal (Transverse) plane
Toward the head (higher)
Superior (cranial)
Toward the tail (lower)
Inferior (caudal)
