Q

What is a solid structure

Q

What is static load & dynamic load on a bridge?

A

The materials used to make the bridge is a static load. Cars and trucks on a bridge are the dynamic load.

Q

What is a suspension bridge?

A

Hangs between 2 ends that hold it up. A modern suspension has tall towers on either end support the main cables holding up the bridge. The main cables are anchored in concrete at each end of the bridge. Smaller cables which support the roadway are suspended from the main cables.

16
Q

Arch bridge

A

Designed to withstand heavy loads. The dynamic load of people and other traffic causes each piece of wood or stone in the arch to push up against the piece of wood next to it. this push is eventually transported to the end supports which are embedded in the ground. the ground pushes back (resists) an the resistance is placed through all the peices creating an arch.

17
Q

How do you calculate performance?

A

Divide the weight of the bridge by how much weight it is supposed to hold.

18
Q

Arch

A

is a common shape in a structures such as bridges. An arch can support a large load because the load is carried down to the arch to the foundation. This spreads out the load.

19
Q

Beams

A

Beams are common components in a wide range of structures a simple being is a flat structure that is supported at each end. if too much weight is put on a beam in the middle it will bend in a U-shaped and may even break, changing the shape of the beam however can increase it’s strength. the shape of an I-beam gives it strength I-beams have less mass than solid beams girders or box beams are long beams in the shape of hollow rectangular prisms.

20
Q

What are the three main structural components?

A

Arches, columns, beams
