Science Unit D Flashcards
What is a solid structure?
A solid structure is formed from a solid piece of some strong material. A solid structure has little or no space inside and relies on its own mass to resist the forces acting on it. And is usually stronger than a frame or shell structure
What are the three main structural forms?
Solid, frame, shell
What is a frame structure?
A frame structure is made up of rid hid arrangement of parts or structural components fastened together. The strength of a frame structure comes from the way it is joined. It is not as strong individually.
What is a shell structure?
A shell structure has a solid outer face, which may be rounded or flat in shape and hollow on the inside. Shell structures with a solid outer face is stronger than than those with a flat outer face because the curved areas distribute the load around the whole surface.
What structures designed to do?
Serve more than one function
What does an airplane serve as its functions?
It provides movement and shelter
How can technological problems in n structures be solved?
Using many different structural designs, materials and processes
How do some people get ideas on different types of structures?
Looking at the natural world
What are aesthetics?
Aesthetics refers to the pleasing appearance or effect that an object has because of its design
Do structures have to be aesthetically pleasing?
No, a train track does not have to be beautiful it has one purpose to serve
What is function?
What something is made to do
What shows that humans have adapted to the environment around them
The way the homes are made and what they are made out of
What kind of houses do countries with hot climates use?
They are usually made out of sunbaked brick, clay or, mud
What is a force?
A push or pull that tends to cause an object to change its movement or shape
What does the effect of force on a structure depend on?
The magnitude
The direction of the force
The location where the force is applied
What happens if the forces magnitude is big?
The stronger effect it will have on a structure
What is a Newton?
The standard unit for measuring force
1 kg=
10 N
What is an external force?
It is a force that is applied on a structure by something else
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object. The more mass the more gravitational force
What is center of gravity?
An imaginary point on a structure where gravity acts
What is symmetry?
A balanced arrangement of mass that occurs on opposite sides of a line or plane, or around a center or axis
What factor do engineers need to take into consideration when designing a structure?
They have to consider the load it will have to resist
