instinct theory
an organism is motivated to complete a task because they are biologically programed to do so
drive-reduction theory
physiological needs create an aroused state causing an animal to reduce tension and maintain homeostasis
incentive theory
organisms are motivated to act in a way that will get them a reward
arousal theory
individuals are motivated to maintain a preferred level of alertness; the optimal level for most tasks is moderate
James-Lange theory
emotions occur as a result of physiological reactions to events
Cannon-Bard theory
stimulating events trigger feelings and physical reactions at the same time
Schachter-Singer theory
also known as the two factor theory; two factors are needed in order for emotions to occur
opponent process theory
emotions are pairs of opposites
10 basic emotions
joy, interest/excitement, surprise, sadness, anger, disgust, contempt, fear, shame, guilt
general adaptation syndrome
pattern of responses the body goes through after being prompted by a stressor. (alarm, resistance, exhaustion)
tend and befriend response
the protection of offspring and the seeking out of social group in response to a threat for protection
type A personality
constant feeling of working against the clock and a strong feeling of competitiveness
type B personality
tends to live with lower stress levels and disregards stress when they don’t achieve
