Unit 5: Consciousness Flashcards
consciousness
our awareness of ourselves and our environment
hypnosis
a social interaction in which a subject responds to hypnotist’s suggestions that certain perceptions, feelings, thoughts, or behaviors will occur
post hypnotic suggestions
a suggestion made by a hypnotist to be carried out after the session
dissociation
a split in consciousness, allows for some thoughts/behaviors to occur simultaneously
biopsychosocial approach
biological: distinctive brain activity, unconscious info processing
psychological: focused attention, expectations, heightened suggestibility
social: presence of authoritative person in legitimate context
circadian rhythm
the body’s biological clock that controls temperature and the digestive system to influence sleep
REM
rapid eye movement; sleep stage where dreams occur and muscles are paralyzed
functions of sleep
protect, repair, rebuild, growth, creativity
sleep spindles
NREM 2; burst of neural activity
K complexes
NREM 2; stable sleep is occuring
alpha waves
slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake state
delta waves
large, slow brain waves associated with deep sleep
manifest content
the censored storyline of our dreams
latent content
the underlying meaning of our dreams
REM rebound
the tendency for REM sleep to increase following REM sleep deprivation
reasons for dreaming
process and save information, develop neural pathways, electrical activity, cognitive development
stage 1 NREM
low amplitude waves, mostly high frequency
stage 2 NREM
sleep spindles, K complexes, high frequency
stage 3 NREM
delta waves, low frequency, high amplitude
depressants
calm the body and mental process
stimulants
increase brain activity
opiates
intense calming effects
barbiturates
depressants that cause sleepiness and impaired judgement
near death experience
person who is on the brink of death claims that they saw heaven
