Unit 9: Endocrine&Nervous Systems Flashcards
What does the parathyroid hormone do?
Increases absorption of calcium and phosphate
What hormone(s) are produced from the parathyroid?
Parathyroid hormone
What hormones are produced by the adrenal cortex?
Glucocorticoids, mineralcorticoids, sex hormones
What do glucocorticoids do?
Promote making of glucose, regulate metabolism if carb, proteins, and fats
What do mineralcorticoids do?
Increase blood levels of sodium and decrease levels of potassium
What hormone does adrenal medulla produce?
Epinephrine and norepinephrine
What does epinephrine and norepinephrine do?
Mimic sympathetic nervous system activation, increase heart rate and raise BP
What hormones does the pancreas produce?
Glucagon and insulin
What does glucagon do?
Increases blood glucose levels
What does insulin do?
Losers blood glucose levels
What hormones does the anterior pituitary produce?
Adrenocorticotropic Follicle stimulating Growth hormone Lutenizing hormone Prolactin Thyroid stimulating
What does the adrenocorticotropic hormone do?
Promotors secretion of hormones by adrenal cortex
What does FSH do?
Stimulates egg production, increases estrogen
Stimulates sperm production
What does the GH do?
Stimulates growth
What does LH do?
Promotes ovulation, production of estrogen and progesterone
Secretion of testosterone
What does prolactin do?
Promotes lactation
What does TSH do?
secretes the thyroid hormone
What does the posterior pituitary produce?
Antidiuretic hormone
Oxytocin
What does antidiuretic hormone do?
Increase water reabsorbtion
What does oxytocin do?
Stimulates uterine contractions, initiates labor
Milk secrection
What does the thyroid produce?
Calcitonin
Thyroxine (T3 and T4)
What does calcitonin do?
Regulates calcium levels in blood
What does t3 and t4 do?
Increase energy production
Increase rate of protein synthesis
What does HRT stand for?
Hormone replacement therapy
What does ICSH stand for?
Interstitial cell stimulating hormone
What does PGH stand for
Pituitary growth hormone
What does RAIU stand for?
Radioactive iodine uptake
what does CO stand for?
Cardiac output
What does CVD stand for?
Cerebrovascular disease
What does EEG stand for?
Electroencephalogram
What does EMG stand for?
Electromyography
What does TIA stand for?
Transient ischemic attack
What does MS stand for?
Mitral stenosis
What does LP stand for?
Lumbar puncture
What is Addison disease?
Deficiency of cortical hormones; adrenal cortex is damaged
What is Cushing syndrome?
Excessive amnts of cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone circulating in the blood
What is diabetes mellitus?
Impaired carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism; insufficient production of insulin
What is type 1 diabetes?
Abrupt, due to failure of the pancreas
