Unit 8.3 - Effects of the Cold War Flashcards
Proxy War
A war between nations that receives help from a major power who does not always directly fight

Proxy Wars in Cuba and Angola
What did the Soviets build to prevent Russians from fleeing their side into the European and U.S. territory of Germany/Berlin?
The Berlin Wall
How the USSR and US maintained influence and strength during the Cold War
Military alliances; for the US, it was easier to influence smaller alliances than through the UN
Name of the Soviet alliance system
The Warsaw Pact (or communist bloc)
Name of the US alliance system
NATO (National Atlantic Treaty Organization)
Two other alliances against communism
The SEATO (Southeast Asian Treaty Organization) and CENTO (Central Treaty Organization)
Ways (2) the Korean and Vietnam Wars were similar
They both were divided into a northern and southern section and the communists ruled the northern side.
Way (1) Korean and Vietnam Wars were different
While the Korean War started because North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to unite the country again and the US sent troops while the Soviet Union only sent money and weapons, there was a lot more pressure on the US to win the Vietnam War and they had to train the Vietnam troops and the leader of South Vietnam was unpopular
Domino Theory
The belief that if one country in a region is communist, it will spread to the rest
Bay of Pigs Invasion
An unsuccessful attack in communist Cuba because the US troops were severely outnumbered. While communist nations had taken full control of the country, only a group of Cubans were against Castro, a communist revolutionary, and had asked for help from the U.S.
Nuclear Proliferation
The spread and increase in nuclear weapons in countries
Examples (2) of when nuclear weapons decreased
The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty prevented testing nuclear weapons on land, underwater, and in space, limiting the amount of radiation exposure for citizens, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which prevented the spread of nuclear technology and materials to non-nuclear countries.
What was there a great amount of fighting between ethnic groups in Angola?
It was caused after Angola won its independence from European colonialism. Ethnic groups which had been rivals, forced together under one government, and then once again free, were all fighting for their independence and ownership over diamond mines.
How the US and USSR influenced the Angolan Civil War
The US backed the Bankongo tribe while the USSR and Cuba backed the Mbundu Tribe
