1934 - debtor nations can’t borrow money.
Serviceman’s Readjustment Act
1940s - after war, GI BILL passed to give low-interest loans to start businesses, grants for college, and unemployment benefits to veterans.
Taft-Hartley Act
Late ’40s - Congress passed law to prevent strikes smudge could order cooling-off period –> Truman vetoed, Congress overrode.
22nd Amendment
Late ’40s - limited the pres. to 2 terms.
Fair Deal
Late ’40s - raised minimum wage from $.40 to $.75 per hour, gave social security benefits to more peeps.
Truman Doctrine
1947 - asked congress for $ to help Greece + Turkey because GB was unable to continue helping them fight communism. –> wanted to support free people fighting communism.
Nat’l Security Act
1947 - consolidated the armed forces, created Department of Defense (the Pentagon), NSC (Nat’l Security Council) to advise the pres.
NATO
1949 - France, GB, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, eventually the US unified into raw North Atlantic Treaty Organization (eventually included Greece, Turkey, W. Germany).
McCarran Act
1950 - anybody communist must register, gov’t may investigate any group, gov’t may suspend habeas corpus.
