Define breathing
Process of engaging oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
First part of respiration
Define respiration
The entire process by which a body gets and uses oxygen an eliminates carbon dioxide and water
Define cellular respiration
Second part of respiration and involves the chemical reaction that releases energy from food
What is broken down in cellular respiration
Food is broken down and energy is released
Define nose
Main passageway into and out of respiratory system
Define pharynx
Throat. Air traveling from nose leads here. Pharynx branches into two tubes
Where does the esophagus lead to
Stomach
Where does the larynx lead to
Lungs
Define larynx
Contains the vocal cords.
Define trachea
Known as the windpipe;passageway for air traveling from the larynx to the lungs
Define bronchi
The trachea branch into two tubes
What does the bronchus do
Goes to each lung
What does the bronchioles do
Carries oxygen in, and carbon dioxide out
Define lungs
Sponge-like organs which take oxygen from the air & deliver it to the blood
Define Alveoli
Each lung contains bronchiole branches that form tiny sacs called alveoli
