Unit 7B Flashcards
Skeletal system
Bones, cartilage, and the structures that connect bones to cartilage make up your skeletal system
What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system
Give shape and support Protect internal organs Move muscles Form blood cells Store calcium and phosphorous
Protection
Heart & lungs are protected by ribs
Spinal Cord protected by vertabrae
Brain protected by skull
Storage
Bones store minerals that help the nerves and muscles function correctly
Movement
Skeletal muscles pull on the bone to produce movement
How many vertebrae are in the spine
26
Largest human bone
Femur
Spongy bone
Provides strength without weight
Compact bone
Resists shock and stress
Periosteum
Covering were ligaments and tendons attach
Red marrow
Where blood cells are made
Yellow marrow
Where fat is stored
Joint
Location where two bones meet
Moveable joint and immovable joint
MOVEABLE JOINT- allow movement when muscles contract
IMMOVABLE JOINT- they are fixed and allow 0 movement
How many bones are in the adult
206
How many bones are in the baby
305
Ligaments
Connective tissue hold joints together (bone to bone)
Axial skeleton
Skull, ribs, vertebral column
Appendicular skeleton
Pectoral girdle(shoulder blades), pelvic girdle (hip), limbs
Simple fracture
Bone breaks but doesn’t penetrate skin
Compound fracture( open fracture)
Bone penetrates the skin; may remain outside skin or break through and go back inside
Greenstick fracture
Bone bends and breaks on one side; occurs in young children’s soft bones
Sprains
Injury to a ligament caused by stretching a joint too far!
Osteoporosis
A disease that causes bone to become thin and weak; can break more easily. Due to lack of calcium in diet
