Psychoanalytic Theories of Personality
Unconscious
Unacceptable thoughts, feelings, wishes, & memories
Ego
Operates on reality principle (seeks to satisfy id’s impulses in a realistic way).
Id
Unconscious psychic energy constantly trying to satisfy basic need; operates on pleasure principle.
Super Ego
Conscience forces ego to consider the ideal (how we ought to behave).
Psychosexual Development
Process during which personality and sexual behavior mature through a series of stages.
Fixated
When one’s desire is tied to an object of desire connected to an earlier phase in one’s psychosexual development.
Defense Mechanisms
A mental process initiated, typically unconsciously, to avoid conscious conflict or anxiety.
Oral Stage
- 0-18 months
- Pleasure centers on the mouth-sucking, biting, chewing.
Anal Stage
- 18-36 months
- Pleasure focuses on bowel & bladder eliminator; coping with demands for control
Phallic Stage
- 3-6 years
- Pleasure zone is the genitals; coping with your incestuous sexual feelings.
Oedipus Complex-Castration Anxty
Freud believed that as the child becomes aware of the physical differences between males and females, he assumes that the females penis has been removed.
Electra Complex-Penis Envy
Theory that girl’s develop resentment towards their mother for “castrating” them, and develops attachment to their father.
Genital Stage
Final stage of development, where person seeks to satisfy sexual impulses.
Latency Stage
The period of reduced sexuality that Freud believed occurred between approximately age seven and adolescence.
Carl Jung
Collective Unconscious: the collective conscious refers tot eh idea that a segment of the deepest unconscious mind is genetically inherited & not shaped by personal experience.
Archetypes: the persona, the shadow, the anima/animus, the self, and the hero.
Alfred Adler
Compensation: striving for a personally defined superiority. It is the attempt to move upward from a place of inferiority to a place of superiority.
Inferiority Complex: natural-born psychological state of all people
Karen Horney
Anxiety: when a person feels hopeless or isolated due to being raised by emotionally neglectful parents.
Neurotic Trends: methods of dealing with anxiety can become excessive and obsessive.
