Social Development in Childhood
Attachment
An emotional tie with another person; shown in young children by their seeking closeness to their caregiver & showing distress and seperation.
Critical Period
An optimal period when certain events must take place to facilitate proper development.
Temperament
A person’s innate & in born characteristic emotional reactivity & intensity.
Imprinting
The ability to form close, loving relationships; primary developmental task in late adolescence & early adulthood.

Trust v. Mistrust
- Birth to 1 year
- Sensing that the world is safe & I
can trust others.
Autonomy v. Shame & Guilt
- 1 to 3 years old
- Knowing that I can act on my own and be independent.
Initiative v. Guilt
- 3 to 6 years
- Planning & doing new things & managing my failures.
Industry v. Inferiority
- 6 to 12 years
- Learning basic competencies & comparing myself favorable with others.
Identity v. Identity Confusion
- 12 to 20 years
- Integrating my roles into a single, consistent identity.
Integrity v. Despair
- 65+ years
- Appraising my life in a way that allows me to appreciate its significance & meaning.
Intimacy v. Isolation
- 20 to 40 years
- Sharing myself deeply without fear of losing my identity.
Generativity v. Stagnation
- 40 to 60 years
- Contributing to others & society through my offspring & productive work.

Authoritarian
Impose rules and demand obedience.
Authoratative
Set rules that allow open discussion and exceptions.
Permissive Indulgent
Set few limits, make few demands, & use little punishment.
Permissive Indifferent
Parents are careless, inattentive, and do not seek a close relationship with children.
