5.1 - 5.5 Flashcards
Information Processing Model
Works to describe effortful processing; falls apart a bit with things we automatically process.
Encoding
Process of putting information into our minds.
Storage
Storing information into our mind like a hard drive.
Retrieval
Process in which information in your memory can be recalled back into your short-term memory.
Short-Term Memory
Holds information we are aware of or thinking about at any given moment; also working memory.
Long-Term Memory
Everything that is learned, is stored here; vast amounts of information
Priming
The activation, often unconsciously, of particular associations in long-term implicit memory.
Chunking
Process of taking individual pieces of information & grouping them into larger units; allows for more memorable information
Maintainence Rehearsal
Repeating items over & over to maintain them in short-term memory.
Recognition
Retrieval aided by cues.
Elaborative Rehearsal
Rehearsing information by relating new information to information already stored in long-term memory.
Recall
Retrieval without any cures.
Serial Position Effect
People tend to recall the first items & last items in a list.
Interference
When forgetting occurs because memories interfere with & disrupt one another.
