Spanish-American War

A

Causes: treatment of Cubans by Spanish gov’t; threats to US sugar plantations; publication of the de Lome letter; explosion of the USS Maine.
Outcomes (including territorial gains): US gets Puerto Rico, Cuba (which was supposed to get independence), the Philippines, Guam; Spain is essentially knocked out of being a world power (they were in decline for quite some time earlier anyway).

USS Maine

A

US battle ship in Havana, Cuba harbor; there to protect fleeing US citizens and their property. Its explosion was one of the causes of the Spanish-American War. US investigation said that the Spanish blew it up; Spanish investigation said that an internal explosion sank the ship.

A

group created by former Sec. of Navy, Teddy Roosevelt; made up of mostly western cowboys and ex-convicts; they went to Cuba to fight in the Spanish-American War; more died of disease than battlefield injuries

A

US urged European colonizers to recognize and respect China’s rights; US wanted trading access to China since we were too late to the imperialism game to claim any territory ourselves; basically, China should be open to trade for everyone

Panama Canal

A

canal created out of the new country, Panama; US urged rebels in Nicaragua to revolt and form their own country; US then signed a land deal with Panama to build the Panama Canal, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; this canal made it easier to transport goods, as well as naval vessels from one ocean to another

A

preventative intervention in Latin America; added to the Monroe Doctrine; gave the US the right to intervene in domestic affairs of Latin America to restore military and financial order (as it benefited the US, ie. Panama)

RMS Lusitania

A

British armed merchant ship carrying passengers and, secretly, US produced munitions for Britain; sunk by Germany u-boat off the coast of GB; almost 1,200 killed, including 128 Americans; one of the events that will eventually get the US involved in WWI

Wilson’s Fourteen Points

A

Wilson’s post-war peace plan; included eliminating secret treaties or trade deals, freedom of the seas, giving colonies/territories their independence and creating an international peacekeeping body (League of Nations)

A

Wilson = Democratic candidate (winner)
T. Roosevelt = Bull Moose Progressive candidate
Taft = Republican candidate
Election split the Republican vote; did give voters a clear choice in progressive policies (New Freedom vs. New Nationalism)

A

passed in 1917; prohibited interference with the draft and any other acts deemed “disloyal” to the US or the war effort; a blow to civil liberties, especially when combined with the Sedition Act

A

passed in 1918; outlawed speaking out against the gov’t in wartime; primarily targeted labor leaders and socialists; many were pardoned after the war, including Eugene Debs; limited freedom of speech

2nd Battle of the Marne

A

significant b/c its the last German offensive; they are trying to capture Paris before the US gets involved in the war, but the strategy fails and Germany is on the defensive for the rest of the war

Paris Peace Conference

A

Conference held after the armistice ends the fighting in WWI; Big Four are main decision makers on peace terms (US=Wilson, GB=David Lloyd George, Fr=Georges Clemenceau, Italy=Vittorio Orlando); Russian is not invited and Germany gets no say in the decision-making process

international peace keeping body created out of Wilson’s 14th point; US does not join; body is weak b/c it does not have a military branch

A

treaty that ended WWI; Germany was harshly treated in this treaty; forced to pay war reparations, loss of military capabilities and territory, in addition to being forced to accept full responsibility for the war
