People questions their religious beliefs as the teachings of the church. People accepted mysteries of the universe as workings of God. Newton sought to reveal God through this work. Critics wanted to get rid of religious faith of superstitions and fear and promote religious tolerance.

Hobbes expressed ideas in a work called Leviathan. He believed humans were naturally selfish and wicked. Locke had a more positive view. He believed people could learn from experiences.

Frederick the second supported the philosophers ideas. He granted religious freedom reduced censorship and improved education but did nothing to end suffrage because he wanted the support of the nobles.
