Mexican Revolution

A

Definition: Major revolution in Mexico in 1910, to overthrow Diaz’s dictatorship.

LO1: In the 20th Century, Mexico was an independent nation, ruled under the control of a dictator, Porfirio Diaz. Diaz oversaw a period of stability and some economic progress, allowed foreign investors from the US to control over the country’s resources, and the wealthiest 1 percent controlled 97 percent of the land. In 1910, Diaz jailed Madero, who was the other candidate for president. This act, along with Diaz’s opposition to strong-armed policies, accommodation to foreign powers, and opposition to land reforms, sparked the revolution.

Russian Revolution

A

Definition: Revolution in Russia that overthrew the imperial government and placed the Bolsheviks in power.

LO1: By the early 20th century, Russia was falling behind Europe, the US, and Japan in power. Russia’s challenges were internal; the Russian government was not promoting economic growth, while all the other nations were. These internal problems, led to external ones; without a strong economy to support the military, Russia became weaker in international affairs, this led to the Bolsheviks overthrowing the government; this shocked everyone, because they were the first example of communists running a large country.

Definition:

  • Militarism (Mass production of deadly weapons) (Arms race between Britain and Germany)
  • Alliance System (Triple alliance: GY, AUS, IT) (Triple Entente: BR, FR, RU)
  • Nationalism (tension between BR, FR, GY) (Balkan and Austria-Hungary tension)
  • Imperialism (Europeans compete other Europeans over colonies) (Colonies send troops)
  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (Serbian nationalists plot to assassinate Ferdinand, next in line to AUS throne)

LO2: The causes of WWI are the ones listed above, MANIA and the consequences of WWI was that Germany and the Ottomans lost overseas colonies, Mandate system was formed, Japan moved into Korea and China, and there was a fall and division of many empires.

Total War

A

Definition: Idea that there are more than just soldiers involved in the war; the entire economy pivots to be about the war and there are people giving up items for the war

LO2: One of the causes of WW1 was nationalism and the rise of it, when other nations attacked a home nation, the civilians were angered due to nationalism and tried to help out to support there country, hence why WW1 was a total war. The consequences not only affected the soldiers and government but also the civilians, because everyone played a part in the war.

A

Definition: A severe, worldwide economic depression that caused many economies to crash

LO4: The US stock collapse in 1929 caused bank failures, Fascism developed by Mussolini allowed for Italy to avoid the economic depression. The great depression led to much economic failure worldwide, and many nations had to cut spending drastically.

New Deal

A

Definition: A program made during the Great depression by Roosevelt, in order to restore and reform the US by bringing jobs and regulating banking.

LO4: Roosevelt created this project to try and bring back the US and bring the country relief, recovery, and reform. The New Deal didn’t end the depression in the US, but it helped restore faith in the government, sidestepping communist and socialist overthrows.

Five year plans (Soviet Union)

A

Definition: A government plan made for economic development for 5 years in the SU. Once Stalin was in power, he abandoned Lenin’s New Economic Plan and instituted the Five year plan, which was meant to transform the USSR into an industrial power. Stalin wanted the Soviet Union to catch up to the other Western nations, who were more industrialized.

LO1: The soviet union wasn’t as industrialized as the rest of the western powers, and was still a very agricultural economy. This led to Stalin’s Five year plan, which resulted in many good prices were increased and the USSR became more of an industrial power.

Fascist Corporatist Economy

A

Definition: Under the guise, the government takes total control of the economy to support the state. Citizens mean nothing to the state, they just need to serve the needs of the state.

LO6: Fascism was one of the reasons that helped the start of WW2. Mussolini’s fascism promoted nationalism and expansion values, which were policies that helped ignite the war. The Nazi government, ruled by Hitler, were also fascists, as the opposed Enlightenment philosophies, communism, liberalism, and socialism. These fascist powers eventually had to pay tons of money for reparations, due to their aggressive attacks and the mass atrocities they caused in ww2.

Mandates

A

Definition: Mandate system established by the league of nations, to rule the colonies and territories of the Central Powers. Arab rebels of the former Ottoman Empire were offended by the results of the peace conference, because they were promised self-rule with the Allies, but the Allies forgot all their promised and established the mandate system, where colonies were made out of Arab lands.

LO1: The consequences of WW1, were that many nations lost a lot of their colonies. But in some circumstances, some countries gained colonies. For example, the League of Nations gained and took over Arab colonies.

A

Definition: The causes of WW2 are the great depression, the Treaty of Versailles, The rise of militarism in Germany and Japan, The failure of the League of nations, and Fascist parties rising up. The war began when Germany invaded Poland and broke the earlier non-aggression pact.

LO6: The causes of WW2 are listed above and the consequences of WW2 include the Holocaust being revealed, The peace settlement being made, Marshall’s plan, decline of colonialism, and women now work and go to college.

Definition: Atomic bombs, radars, and more guns were some of the many new technologies made during WW2.

LO3: Governments used propaganda, nationalism, and new weapons to conduct war. For example, JP used bombs on the US, and in return, The US used atomic bombs. With European nations in armed races, rapid machinery making occured.

Holocaust

A

Definition: The genocide of Jews during WWII in concentration camps, led by Hitler.

LO8: Hitler wanted to restore traditional values to GY and rid of Jew influence, which led to the mass killing of Jews. At the end of the war, the Holocaust was revealed and recognized, as more than 6 million Jews died.

Ukrainian Genocide

A

Definition: Holodomor, aka the Ukrainian Genocide, was a genocide against Ukrainians caused by anti-collectivization peasant rebellion that happened in the Soviet Union (USSR). The genocide, by Stalin, resulted in 3.9 million Ukraines using a man-made famine.

LO8: The Ukrainian genocide was caused by Stalin wanting to replace Ukraine’s small farms with state-run collectives, and anti-collectivization peasant rebellions were exiled and killed. The consequence of Holodomor was that it resulted in millions of deaths and it decreased industrial productivity.
