Created the FDA. Requires all meat to be inspected and sanitary before consumers can purchase
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
Major fire in New York factory. Many women died because there were no safety measures
- Displayed the lack of regulations and led to new regulations for worker safety
Workman’s Compensation
Insurance for employees. If a worker in injured at work, they can receive benefits for time lost
Child Labor Laws
Laws that prevent children from working. Encouraged children to get an education. and not be exploited
Ida B. Wells
Southern Muckraker, exposed the horrors of lynching in the south
NAACP
Organization that works for equality of African Americans, created by WEB DuBois
Great Migration
Movement of African Americans from the South to Northern Cities
Left to find opportunities and avoid racism/Jim Crow
16th Amendment
Created a federal income tax
17th Amendment
Allowed people to vote directly for senators
18th Amendment
Banned the production and consumption of alcohol
19th Amendment
Gave women the right to vote!
Prohibition
Period during 1920s where all alcohol was illegal
Women’s Rights movement
Movement for women’s equality. Fought to gain the right to vote (19th amendment)
Conservation Movement
Movement to protect wild areas and preserve natural resources

Land protected by the federal government

When a country expands influence over other territories

Poem that argued it was White peoples’ responsibility to civilize and educate the rest of the world.

Argument that the United States had run out of territory to expand westward. as a result they needed to expand overseas.

Overly exaggerated headlines used to sell Newspapers. Led to the Spanish American War
