Basic Industries
Industries that sell their products or services primarily to consumers outside the settlement.
Nonbasic Industries
Industries that sell their products primarily to consumers in the community.
Bid Rent Theory
The price and demand for real estate changes as the distance from the central business district (CBD) increases.
Brownfields
Abandoned and polluted industrial site in a central city or suburb.
Business Services
Services that primarily meet the needs of other businesses.
Central Business District (CBD)
The downtown of a central city, the CBD is marked by high land values, a concentration of business and commerce.
Central Place Theory
Theory that explains how and where central places in the urban hierarchy should be functionally and spatially distributed with respect to one another, proposed by Walter Christaller.
City
Conglomeration of people and buildings clustered together to serve as a center of politics, culture, and economics.
Commercialization
Transformation of the central city to attract residents and tourists to the newly commercialized downtowns.
Commuter Zone
Area in which people choose to live in residential suburbia and take a daily commute into the CBD to work.
Complementary Goods
A good whose use is related to the use of an associated or paired good. Two goods (A and B) complementary if using more of good A requires the use of more of good B. Ex: Peant Butter and Jelly.
Complementary Regions
A region formed by the combination of two areas with different activities or strengths, each of which benefits from the other; could be like a city and a suburb or two different countries that produce items the other needs.
Consumer Services
Businesses that provide services primarily to individual consumers, including retail services and personal services.
De facto Segregation
Segregation that results from natural residential settlement patterns rather than from prejudicial laws (De jure segregation is done by law).
Disamenity Sector
The very poorest parts of cities that in extreme cases are not connected to regular city services and sometimes controlled by gangs and drug lords.
Economic Base
A community’s collection of basic industries.
Edge City
Shifting focus of economic activity to a large node of office and retail activities on the edge of an urban area.
Feminization of Poverty
The trend of women making up an increasing proportion of the poor often due to gender inequality related issues and single females as head of household.
Filtering
In urban areas, the process of housing going from large single-family homes to subdivided apartments and eventual abandonment. Property owners stop maintaining or abandoning the properties since tenants often cannot afford rent.
Functional Specialization
Production of particular goods or services as a dominant activity in a particular location.
