State
An area controlled by an established government that has authority over its internal affairs and foreign policy.
Nation
Legally, a term encompassing all the citizens of a state.
Nation-State
Theoretically, a recognized member of the modern state system possessing formal sovereignty and occupied by people who see themselves as single united nation.
Multi-state Nation
A nation that transcends the boundary of two or more states.
Multinational state
A country with multiple culture groups or multiple ethnic groups under a single government; each group has a historic tie or connection to a particular piece of land and traditions of self-determination and agree to coexist peacefully by recognizing each other as distinct nationalities; i.e. United Kingdom, Canada
Multiethnic state
A state that contains more than one ethnicity.
Stateless nation
Nation that doesn’t have a state.
Landlocked states
A state that lacks a sea coast.
Microstates
A term for a state or territory small in both population and area.
Autonomous or semi-autonomous regions
Frontiers
A zone of territory where a state exercises no or limited political authority.
Enclave
A geographic area surrounded by the territory of another country. This area may be a separate country or where a particular ethnic group is spatially clustered (ethnic enclave) and socially and economically distinct from the majority group.
Exclave
A portion of a state that is separated from the main territory and surrounded by another country.
Buffer state
Neutral state lying between two rival and potentially hostile states and serving to prevent conflict between them.
Satellite state
A country which is formally independent, but under heavy influence or control by another country; “puppet states” term often associated with the USSR.
Colonialism
An effort by one country to establish settlements in a territory and to impose its political, economic, and cultural principles on that territory.
Colony
A territory that is legally tied to a sovereign state rather than being completely independent.
Boundary
An invisible line that marks the extent of a state’s territory.
Frontier
A zone where no state exercises complete political control.
Perforated state
A state that completely surrounds another one.
Fragmented state
Includes several discontinuous pieces of territory.
Landlocked state
Lacks a direct outlet to a sea because it is completely surrounded by several other countries.
Democracy
A country in which citizens elect leaders and can run for office.
Autocracy
A country that is run according to the interests of the ruler rather than the people.
Anocracy
A country that is not fully democratic or fully autocratic but displays a mix of the two types.
