Unit 6 - Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What is Homeostasis?
A
The maintenance of a constant internal environment in the face of a ever changing external environment
2
Q
How is equilibrium maintained?
A
By feedback mechanisms
3
Q
What are the 3 components of feedback mechanisms +their functions?
A
- Sensory Receptor = detects a change
- Control Center = determines appropriate response
- Effector = responds to the change
4
Q
What is negative feedback? Give an example
A
The most important homeostatic mechanism. It consists of a response to counteract a change
(EX. a thermostat)
5
Q
What is positive feedback? Give an example
A
Produces a response to intensify the change. These do not happen very often.
(EX. childbirth)
