what are essential oils?
NOT true oils, they are terpenes mainly, aromatic compounds of plants that give their scent
why are essential oils called oils?
b/c they are hydrophobic and have qualities of oils
why are oils produced in specialized structures? what form do they take?
bc they are phytotoxic to plants = glandular trichomes (leaf hairs), resin ducts, or glandular epidermis etc. throughout the plant
why do plants have essential oils?
antimicrobial, attract/deter insects, and induce responses in defence within plant or amongst others
what is the difference between a herb and a spice?
herbs are non-woody herbaceous plants spices have no definition
which family contributes the most to herbs and spices? example?
Lamiaceae, the mint family ex. mint
what comes from the Lauraceae family?
cinnamon, bay leaves
what comes from the Apiaceae family?
dill, parsley, fennel, cumin, and coriander
