What happens to the cost of land as distance from the CBD increases?
The cost of land decreases. Everyone wants to be by mula!
What is the order of land use types from the CBD? (Closest to furthest)
Retail, manufacturing, and residential
Were early cities compact? Why?
Early cities were compact because people had to walk everywhere. Back then, they didn’t have cars or trains
How did cities grow over time?
Industrialization and transportation. AS both became more advanced, people and business could move further from CBD but still have access. THIS ALLOWED THE CITIES TO EXPAND OUTWARD
How did automotive transport impact land use?
It impacted land use by EXPANDING EVERYTHING OUTWARD. This means businesses and settlements could be further from CBD. Later, this contributed to edge cities and suburbs.
What happens to pop density as distance from CBD increases?
It decreases
How does zoning work and how does it impact density?
Zoning is when the gov makes restrictions on how land can be used. An area declared affordable housing will have a higher density than an area labeled suburban
How does technology and online jobs impact density?
It decreases density in a city, because they allow people to live further from CBD and still have acccces to goods and jobs there. (Working from home, buying clothes online etc)
What is infastructure?
Systems that uphold a place like sewage and education
What is a fiscal squeeze?
When people leave a city (they’re squeezed out), the pop density decreases, tax profits decline, and then the government struggles paying to maintain infastructure
How do cities counteract fiscal squeeze
Cities try to regain people and profit through sports franchises, big business, and tourist attractions
How does a transition from blue collar jobs to white collar jobs change density and residents?
This means a transition from manufacturing jobs to international finance, insurance and real estate. This means fewer jobs for unskilled workers, higher coveted housing, and an increase of homelessness
What is gentrification?
When a low income area is redeveloped for high income residents

Hugh income groups live there, there are expensive apartments or single family homes, and it is in a favorable location
