Unit 2 Flashcards
Census
Finding population
Non participation
Causes controversy in the census
Sampling
A method of gathering data yourself (population)
What are the four major population concentrations?
East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe
What does East Asia include?
Eastern China, Islands of Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and the Islands of Taiwan
What does South Asia include?
Indira, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Islands of Sri Lanka. Very rural.
What does South East Asia include?
Mostly islands that lie between Indian and pacific oceans
Eucemene
The amount of Earth’ surface taken up of permanent human settlement
What do Eucemene areas have in common?
Low lying, fertile soil, temperate climate, access to the ocean
Where is population sparse?
Dry lands, wet lands, cold lands, high lands (extremes)
Arithmetic density
The amount of something (people) per given area (people/land)
Physiological density
The amount of people per arable land (people/arable land)
Agricultural density
The number of farmers per arable land (farmers/land)
What does physiological density show us?
The stress of agriculture in a country, how many people need to be fed per unit of land
What does agricultural density show us?
How many people work as farmers in a given area, tech development in a society (if density is high, tech is bad)
Crude Birth Rate
The amount of babies a. Year born for every 1000 people
CBR =
Amount of babies born/(amount of people/1000)
Crude death rate
The total amount of deaths per year per 1000 people
CDR=
Amount of deaths/amount of people divided by 1000
Natural increase rate
The percentage a society grows each year excluding immigration
Doubling time
The amount of years needed in order for the population to double
Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
The amount of babies a mother can be expected to have
ESPeN
Economic, social, political, environmental
What are economic reasons people would settle in an area?
Job opportunities, access to natural resources, near trade routes
What is a case study of economic factors impacting where people live?
Norilsk Siberia, it’s freezing, but deposits nickel, which is money
What are social factors that impact where people settle?
Housing available, safety, access, transportation, sense of community
Political factors where people settle?
Military can encourage settlement. If they build base, can reduce population by creating parks or historical sites, allowing high-rise buildings, and some errors in single-family homes in others.
Environmental factors that impact where people settle?
Lack of pollution cleaner, near water, fertile soil, elevation, extreme weather
Case study of environmental factors impact anymore people live?
2005 Hurricane Katrina people went from New Orleans to Texas or New York
Social stratification
People splitting up into a hierarchical division, because of their economic status, power or ethnicity
Carrying, Capacity
The population in area can support
Mid latitudes
Regions between 30° and 60° north and south of the equator
A wide base and a tapering upward indicate what on a population pyramid?
That the region is growing, and there’s a large percentage of children
Birth deficit
Slow down a births in the society
Baby boom
A spike in population
Baby bust
Birth rates are lower until boomers have children.
Echo
When a baby boom reaches reproductive ages, and create another spike in birth rate
What does a big elder population indicate?
It indicates a decline in population
What does a large percentage of middle-age people in the population indicate?
It indicates slow growth
What does a square shape indicate in a population pyramid?
Little to no growth, a stable population
What DTM stage has a high CDR and CBR, but a low NIR?
Stage 1
What DTM stage has a high CBR, a rapidly decreasing CDR, and a stable NIR?
Stage 2
What DTM stage has a decreasing CBR, a low CDR, and an increasing NIR?
Stage 3
What DTM stage has a low CBR, a super low CDR, and a low NIR?
stage 4
What DTM stage has a dangerously low CBR, a low CDR, and a negative NIR?
stage 5
give an example of each DTM stage lowest to highest
Amazon, India, Brazil, US, Germany/Japan
Stage 1 pop pyramid
Inconsistent population pyramid
Stage 2 population pyramid
Looks like an exponential graph. Very wide at bottom, skinny on top
Stage 3 pop pyramid
Stable rectangle with pyramid on top
Stage four pop pyramid
Rectangle with tiny taper on top
Stage five pop pyramid
Inverted triangle, less babies being born
Example of a pro natalist policy
In Japan, there is the angel policy which gives families incentives for having more than one child. For instance, you don’t have to pay as much taxes, and the government will give you free free, family counseling.
Example of anti natalist policy
One child policy in China forces parents who have more than one child to pay a fine
