Political Geography
The way the world is organized based off territories and power
Do all countries have the same maps? Give an example
No. Maps can change based on how one country views another. For example, the UN does not recognize Vatican City as a country
What makes something a state?
It has defined territory, perm. pop., is recognized by international community, and has sovereignty
When was the UN created?
After WW2 in the 1940’s.
What were the 3 times UN membership rabidly increased?

Nazi Germany Breakup 1955, African colonies joining 1960, Soviet Union and Yugoslavia breakup 1990-1993
Sovereignty
Independence
Nation
A cultural entity that shares a language, religion, ethnicity, or heritage. They may or may not occupy a state.
Micro states
very small sized state, like Vatican City, Monaco, and Malta
Nation States
A state comprised of mostly the same nation (group of people). 90% or more
Self Determination
An ethnicity has the right to govern itself
Multi State Nation
a nation that can be found across many borders
Multinational State
A state with a variety of nations, but each ethnicity has SELF DETERMINATION
Multi ethnic state
a state with many ethnicities, like US
Autonomous Region
A place with independence and self gov. in a state. Like Hong Kong until it got taken over by China.
Semi autonomous Region
Autonomous region with less power
