Define job production
Each product is customized or tailor made, to meet specific requirements of the customer
Each product is completed before the next is started

Producing items in identical groups, then moving on to the next batch
Define mass production

Usually highly automated
Moves along production stations
Define flow production

Cons of job production
Time consuming
Labour intensive
Need specialist labour and tools
High unit costs as no Economies of Scale
Pros of mass production
High economies of scale so lower unit costs
Fixed costs are spread over a large quantity
Specialization of labour
Capital intensive so standardized
Low labour costs
Cons of mass production
Low levels of employee motivation Less variety Large set up costs, e.g. machinery Inflexible Storage costs
Pros of batch production
Some EOS
Some variety
Can diversify the number of products sold
Cons of batch production
Some EE motivation
Some degree of inflexibility
Define cell production
Similar to mass/flow production
Production line is split up into self-contained units (cells)
Each unit completes a distinct part of the production
Pros of cell production
Autonomy within the cell
Higher motivation – teamwork, job enrichment/rotation
Promotion opportunities
Cons of cell production
Still capital intensive
Conflict between cells
