Unit 5: river/land use/beach processing techniques Flashcards
what is the purpose of a stream analysis
Used to measure stream size, shape, flow velocity and discharge. Allows illustration of relationships between variables
how is a vegetation analysis done
Usually done with a transect, you count the number of diff types of vegetation in the transect area. Completed on grass, you can also use a quadrat
What is the purpose of a perception study
Used to support evidence for various lines of inquiry - these are subjective and variable. Can include age, culture, background, per group ect.
What is the purpose of a questionnaire, design and implementation
Used for population (group areas) to gather info on patterns of behaviour such as shopping, travel, behavioural patterns, opinions on an issue and activities in an area ect.
What is the purpose of a rural/urban land use mapping
Rural: To map land use types in a rural environment. Shows types of intensities of land use and a area with many land uses such as arable. rough pasture, river and flood plains ect.
Urban: same thing but its called rice pots. Often done through a survey. Can be used to research diff conflicting land uses, changes in land over time ect.
How is a beach profile conducted
1) decide on sampling method, stratified, random ect
2) Locate sampling points - visible changes in sand like dunes
3) use reference point for each sampling (ranging pole)
4) use compass for bearing - make sure always facing right direction
5) measuring point should be low tide, take reading at each point using clinometer bearing
6) measure ground distance between poles
7) record bedform size, sediment size ect.
what is the purpose of a slope analysis
To measure and produce a profile (shape/morphology) of a slope. The steepness gradient mostly determines how a land is used. Slope transect can be used for coastal and glaciated features and rivers. You investigate angle, height, vegetation, soil depth and moisture
Microclimate analysis methodolgy
1) compass to determine north position
2) decide sampling strategy
3) record weather temp, wind speed/direction and humidity
4) note timing and frequency of readings
5) record variations such as hight above ground with Beaufort reading for speed
What is the purpose of a soil analysis
Studies the composition, texture, physical and chemical properties and characteristics of soil.
Can be linked to patterns of vegetation or agricultural potential. Analysis can include profiles, temp, bulk density, water content, ph ect
Pebble/ sediment methodology
For safety reasons do as group
1) reach down and pick up first rock you feel
2) use calibres, pebbleometer or stoneboard to measure all three axis of rock, average length of axis gives mean to particle size
3) record measurements in table
4) repeat around ten times per location
Land use mapping methodology
An appropriate sampling strategy must be adopted, for example using a transect - 1
Use a large scale map as a base map - 1 with a land use classification key like rice pots to make data collection easier - 1
Students should follow transect route according to information on the base map by adding colours and coded from classification sheet - 1
Slope analysis methodology
The aspect of the slope could be determined using a compass/ OS map - 1
One person should stand at the start and one at the end of each section - 1
To record accurately the ranging poles must be kept straight - 1
Repeat the process every 10 meters or for each break in the slope that has been identified - 1
