Nausea
Unpleasant, subjective feeling that is accompanied by weakness, diaphoresis and hyper production of saliva. Precedes vomiting.
Emesis (Vomiting)
A defense mechanism used by the body to rid itself of toxic substances.
Neurotransmitters Involved in Emesis
Dopamine = GI tract and CTZ in Brain Acetylcholine= VC in brain Histamine=VC in brain Prostaglandins=GI Tract Serotonin=GI tract, CTZ and VC
GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease
Helicobacter Pylori
Bacterium found in GI tract of 90% of clients with duodenal ulcers and 70% of those with gastric ulcers
Peptic Ulcer
Term used for an ulcer occurring on the esophagus , stomach and duodenum.
Caused by erosion of the GI mucosal lining.
Chief Cells
Secrete pepesinogen
Parietal Cells
Secrete hydrochloride acid and intrinsic factor
Anticholinergics
Propantheline bromide inhibits gastric secretions.
Taken before meal.
Antacids
Reduction of pain associated with acid related disorders. Reducing acidity reduces pain
Hypokalemia
S&S
Includes weakness, constipation, irregular pulse rate, and overall feeling o lethargy.
