Unit 2 - Drug Classes: Nervous System Flashcards

1
Q

Adrenergic Agents

Actions, Uses, Drugs

A

Action: Stimulates certain nerves in the body.
Stimulated by 2 classes of drugs: catecholamines and noncatecholamines.
Mimic the effect of sympathetic neurotransmitters Norepinephrine and dopamine

Uses: Asthma, bronchitis, nasal decongestionants

Drugs: Salbutamol, Dopamine, Albuterol, Epinephrine

Q

Beta Blockers

Action, Uses, Drugs

A

Action: Bella blocking agents act by plugging the beta receptors, which prevents other naturally occurring catecholamines from stimulating specific agents.
Can be selective b1: slows HR, conduction to AV nodes
B2: affect smooth muscles of bronchioles

Uses: Treats hypertension, post-myocardial infarction, angina, cardiac dysthymias.

Drugs: Metoprolol, Nadolol, Carvedilol

Q

Cholinergic Agents

Action, Uses, Drugs

A

Action: Known as parasympathomimetic agents.
Stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. Slow heartbeat, increased GI motility and secretions, and construction or urinary bladder, contraction of skeletal muscles.
Uses: Urinary retention, Treatment of myasthenia gravies(skeletal muscle weakness), treats dry mouth.

Drugs: Pilocarpine, ethanol chloride, Donespezil

Q

Anticholinergics

Action, Uses, Drugs

A

Action: Known as parasympatholytic agents
Block the action of acetylcholine in the parasympathetic nervous system. Drugs occupy receptor sits at nerve endings to prevent action from acetylcholine.

Uses: Reduces secretions, overactive bladder, Gastrointestinal disorders, treatment of peptic ulcer disease

Drugs: Atropine, Dicyclomine, Glycopyrrolate
