1844-1877
manifest destiny
the belief that america had the god-given right to possess and expand land, from 1812 to 1867
texas.
texas wanted to be annexed by the us. the american settlers there did not want the things the mexican gov was doing, and the mex government shut down borders for american immigrants.
election of 1844
polk was elected, who was a great believer in manifest destiny, he took a part of oregon, texas, and the mexican cession.
mexican-american war
as texas was annexed into the union, this caused a war because mexico and the states did not agree on where the border was, some of california was gained. ended in the signing of the treaty of guadalupe-hidalgo
treaty of guadalupe-hidalgo
signed in 1848, established the southern border of the united states at rio grand, granted the mexican cession to the states, including california and new mexico.
wilmot proviso
in 1846, declared that any land gained by the mexican-american war would not be eligible for slavery. the amendment was struck down, but it symbolizes major tension
gold rush of 1848
california has gold and people rushed there
free soil
northern democrats and whigs were anti slavery but not because they liked equality but because they like white people
popular sovereingty
leave the decision of slavery up to the state
the compromise of 1850
because california and new mexico wanted to enter as free states, which would throw off the balance, henry clay proposed this, would let cali and nm do their popular sovereignty thing, it outlawed slavery in d.c., and it passed the fugitive slave act.
fugitive slave act
also in 1850, it allowed people from the south to get their slaves back when they tried to escape to the north
underground railroad
trails and pathways by which slaves were given safe passage to the north
kansas-nebraska act of 1854
when kansas and nebraska applied for statehood, slavery would be decided via popular sovereignty. essentially turned over the missouri compromise. this led to bleeding kansas.
bleeding kansas
violence that broke out after the kansas-nebraska act, in which pro slavery and anti slavery activists engaged in violence.
republican party
comprised of anti slavery whigs and democrats and free soilers and their main goal was to stop the spread of slavery.
dred scott case
in 1857, it was ruled that slaves are not citizens and so they are ineligible to sue and that slaves are property, which essentially meant that slavery could exist anywhere
