how did the french policies differ from the spanish?
france was more interested in trade than they were in conquest, in particular, fur trade.
what did the dutch do in the americas?
trade. come on. they’re dutch. they didn’t really interact with the natives. they were in new york. they engaged in shipping and banking/finance. fur trade!
what did the french do in the americas?
the french were more trade-y than the spanish, they engaged in conversions and stuff, they more intermarried and stuff. they also engaged in cultural exchange.
what did the english do in the americas?
while some were people getting wealth, it was also people searching for religious freedoms. in general, while there was some friendliness between natives and the english, there was a lot of violence.
what did the spanish do in the americas?
they engaged in conversions, mining, and most importantly, farming. they enslaved natives and imported african slaves.
jamestown
founded in 1607, funded by a jsc. purely for profit! disease and famine killed nearly half the settlers. in 1612, john rolfe stumbled across tobacco, reversing their being cooked. for now.

bacon’s rebellion
in 1676-1677, bacon led poor people and indentured servants and stuff against berkeley because berkeley refused to protect them against the natives and so naturally, they rebelled, this instilled fear into people as mass destruction was caused, and this led them to (eventually) replace indentured servitude with slavery.

new england colonies were more trade focused, plus major religious motivations.
english west indies colonies?
cash crops, tobacco, major, until the prices fell and sugar cane rose, but because that’s labor intensive, england imported african slaves. proprietary charters.
