What is a pueblo?
They were a group of Native Americans that cultivated corn and had irrigation systems.

The environment shaped the people’s way of life.
what is the encomienda system?
It allowed and justified the forced labor of natives by (Spanish) colonizers.
describe the caste system.
Peninsulares, Spanish born Spaniards, Creoles, American born Spaniards, Mestizos, mixed people (Spanish and Native), Native Americans, and lastly, slaves.
what and when was the reconquista?
The Reconquista started in the early 700s, up until 1492. The Reconquista involved re-acquiring the Iberian peninsula from Muslim empires by Catholic empires.
what’s the colombian exchange?
The Colombian Exchange is the exchange of people, animals, crops, and disease between the Old and New worlds.
where did christopher colombus land?
San Salvador, in the Bahamas.
what’s a joint stock company?
A company, backed by investors, in which ventures are funded and liability and rewards are shared. This was in contrast to Spain’s way of doing things, in which ventures were funded by the crown.
what’s feudalism?
Feudalism is the system in which people work and do labor for higher ups (royals and nobles and whatnot) in exchange for protection.
what did spain do in the americas?
They mined, they converted, but their main thing was agriculture.
who is walter raleigh?
He founded the first American colony, Roanoke, which failed.
what’s the treaty of torsedillas?
An agreement between Spain and Portugal that assorted whose lands were whose based on a line.
