Malaria
A
- upon infection from a mosquito, sporozoites primarily infect liver
- production of merozoites from liver can infect RBCs
- mosquitos become infected by drinking blood of infected human
- P. vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae, and P. falciparum (causes most deaths)
- sexual phase occurs in mosquitos
- most common cause of death is multiorgan failure due to hypoxia and anemia
- dx: blood test or rapid test

Schistosomiasis
A
- katayama fever is associated with worm maturation and laying of eggs
- transmitted to humans with exposure to infected fresh water
- trematodes/flatworms
- eggs shed in feces or urine of infected humans
- eggs hatch in water and released miracidia infect snails
- sporocysts in snails release cercariea that can penetrate skin of humans (swimmer’s itch)
- in human it is called schistosomulae
- sexual reproduction occurs in human (katayama fever)
- dx: stool or urine sample
