Malaria

A
  • upon infection from a mosquito, sporozoites primarily infect liver
  • production of merozoites from liver can infect RBCs
  • mosquitos become infected by drinking blood of infected human
  • P. vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae, and P. falciparum (causes most deaths)
  • sexual phase occurs in mosquitos
  • most common cause of death is multiorgan failure due to hypoxia and anemia
  • dx: blood test or rapid test

Schistosomiasis

A
  • katayama fever is associated with worm maturation and laying of eggs
  • transmitted to humans with exposure to infected fresh water
  • trematodes/flatworms
  • eggs shed in feces or urine of infected humans
  • eggs hatch in water and released miracidia infect snails
  • sporocysts in snails release cercariea that can penetrate skin of humans (swimmer’s itch)
  • in human it is called schistosomulae
  • sexual reproduction occurs in human (katayama fever)
  • dx: stool or urine sample
